Bowls Day 2009

Bowls day was a complete success even though the weather meant that the first attempt on Sunday 26th July had to be cancelled, but the rearranged day on Sunday 13th August provided the goods in terms of bright sunshine.

Bloxwich Bowling Club provided the green free of charge, which was in it's usual immaculate condition.  This must be one of the best greens in the mdlands and we are extremely lucky to have access to it.  Our thanks go to Mr. John Rounds and the club for all their help with the day.

The competition this year was run as a mixed doubles, with Alan and Margaret Chamberlain running out to be outright winners.  The day managed to raise £70.00 for charity which was a respectable figure considering that some brethren couldn't make the rearranged date.  Next year, we will arrange two dates using the second as a fallback date, should the Bloxwich weather do the dirty again.

Steam Train to Stratford Anyone?

Sunday 5th July 2009 was a day to remember for St. Peter's brethren and friends of the lodge alike.  So many of us had booked to go on the 'Shakespeare Express' that we were able to have an entire carriage to ourselves.

The sights and smells along the way no doubt took many of our brethren back to their childhoods, standing at the side of the track with sooty faces, just like the Railway Children!  For other, more youthful members, a Hornby train set is the closest they ever got to sampling the delights of steam travel.  Stratford didn't dissapoint with loads of street shows going on in town and a food fair on the banks of the river.

Having ones own carriage was rather splendid, although seats were allocated on a first come first served basis for most of us.  Apparently, if you organise one of these trips, you can have a servant put a reserved notice on a table so that you can rest and enjoy the fruits of your labour!

Alright for some I suppose!

Broken Field is Raised

Bro. Ken Field was Raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason at the final meeting of St. Peter's Lodge for this masonic year, on Wednesday 8th April 2009.  Our Worshipful Master conducted a wonderful ceremony, assietd by W. Bro. Paul Wood who gave an explanation of the Third Degree Tracing Board and W. Bro Vic Green gave the Traditional History.

Bro. Ken, known as Broken Field since a typographical error on a guest list of our daughter lodge, the Lodge of Stability No. 8667 left the full stop out of the word Bro. was unable to join the brethren at the Festive Board owing to his son, inadvertantly breaking an ankle.  Now we have two Broken Fields!

Our best wishes go to Bro. Ken and we wish his son a speedy recovery.

Welcome Bro. Ian French

St. Peter's Lodge welcomes yet another new initiate, Bro. Ian Timothy French who was initiated at the 384th meeting held on Wednesday 11th March 2009.

Bro. Ian is a resident of Four Oaks, Sutton Coldfield and a life long friend of our Chaplin and Almoner, W. Bro. Greg Bates, who presented the Charge to the Initiate to the relief of our Junior Warden, W. Bro. Vic Green who this year holds one of the Chairs in Chapter.

The Festive Board was  noteable, not only for the quality of the food, but also the quality of the Initiate.  Bro. Ian delivered his reply in superb style, being very well aquainted with public speaking through his role as a Business Development Director.

A Mad (O'Rourkes) Pie Night

St. Peter's strike again, this time with a pie eating frenzy at Mad O'Rourkes Pie & Grill Factory in Wordsley, arranged by W. Bro. Bill Gwillym.

As can be seen from the photo opposite, a huge refectory style tabel was required to seat our ravenous guests at the festive board table.

Large amounts of the local brew 'Lump Hammer' and 'Ice Pick' ale were consumed along with huge pie's with names like Desperate Dan, Wham Bam, Thank you Lamb, The Barrymore and the 100% Bullocks!

Latest Curry Club News

Our Worshipful Master gives the Lime Restaurant, Birmingham Road, Wylde Green the St. Peter's Curry Club seal of approval.

An overall score of 66/100 resulted in a 'Recommended' grade being awarded, although this was down purely to the slow service.  With 36 diners all ordering at the same time and it being a new business, I don't think this would be an issue during a normal evening out.

The food was exceptional, beautifully presented and the menu was varied, listing new 'fusion' dishes alongside old favourites.  It all added upto a wonderful atmosphere with our largest attendance to date, filling the whole of the front part of the restaurant!

Christmas Informal 2008

Another fantastic Christmas Informal event was held on Wednesday 10th December 2008 at the Yenton Assembly Rooms.  Guest numbers were again very high, as was the standard of the meal, which obviously included a plentiful supply of our famous roast potatoes.

The unique evenings entertainment was provided by Gabrielle the Ukulele lady, who as well as regailing the crowd with tails from the Black Country proceeded to mention every person by name and tell the audience a little bit about each guest, having spent just a few minutes chatting on each table, before her act started.

Curry Club

Eight brethren, their wives and 18 guests attended the inaugral St. Peters Curry Club, held at the Mother India restaurant, High Street, Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield on Wednesday 19th Novemner 2008.

W. Bro. Greg Bates who organised the event said 'What we had for £10.00 per head, I don't think you can go far wrong.'

Curry Clubbers were also given the chance to rate the venue for food quality, service and ambiance.  An overall curry club rating of 'Highly Recommended' was awarded to the retaurant and a certificate presented to the manager by our Worshipful Master.

Nominations from brthren are requested for the next Curry Club which will take place in January 2009, so why not nominate your favourite restaurant and show us all what we're missing!

Golf Day

The inaugral St. Peter's Lodge Golf Challenge was a great success and will be repeated this year, and hopfully for many more year's to come.  This will give our Worshipful Master (pictured right) a chance of winning!

Fine weather greeted the batsmen as they tee'd off and for some it was just like being on holiday, as they found the sand and spent many a fine hour digging holes.

A bucket and spade were among a number of prizes handed out at the end of match dinner in the Aston Wood Golf Club restaurant.  The meal was superb and was enjoyed by non-golfers as well as the competitors, which made for a very enjoyable evening.

The proceeds of the collection, £100.00 have been presented to W. Bro. Rex Lowin, together with other monies raised at the Bowls Day on the occassion of our Worshipful Master's installation for the 2012 Festival fund.

Happy Birthday Harry

On Sunday 14th September the Lodge of Stability hosted a 90th birthday celebration for our mutual member and friend, W. Bro. Harry Holmes.  Harry was surprised by the assembled masses having been kept in the dark for a number of weeks by his wife, Rita.  I think the cake say's it all!

Crown Green Bowls

The sun shone over Bloxwich Bowling Club as 16 players, supported by their friends and family went head to head on the green.  A league system ensured everyone had as much green time as possible with the eventual winner being our Worshipful Master.  The runner up being next years Worshipful Master, this years Senior Warden, W. Bro. Bob Townsend.

A similar even is planned for next year says W. Bro. Bob Townsend because we had such a fantastic time and everyone can get involved.  A total of £210.00 was raised for the 2012 Festival.

Ladies Night - Oh What a Night!

Ladies Night 2008 proved to be a massive success with guests travelling from as far afield as Cheshire to sample the famous St. Peter's welcome.  A sumptuous festive board was provided by resident chef Jackie and steward Andrew, which was followed by an evening of cabaret, Las Vegas style courtesy of Miss Milli Munro as Dame Shirley Bassey and Tina Turner.

Milli's voice and on stage persona's were perfect and a double-take was required at every costume change.  She filled the dance floor for over a hour and a half to rapturous standing ovations and even involed our Worshipful Master and guests in dance routines.

During the festive board, W. Bro. Bob Thomson (IPM) and his lady Jean presented Michelle with the Ada Silk Rose Bowl, a tradition dating back to 1973.  The bowl was filled with lillies in a blue and white theme.  Also presented to Michelle, but this time by the newest member of St. Peter's, Bro. Dan Thomas, was the gift from the lodge.  Michelle chose a striking red Radley handbag which she said would last for years and she hoped the memories of the evening would do the same.  Michelle and the Worshipful Master were then thanked by Mrs Elaine Townsend for the lovely ladies gifts of an engraved pen and key ring in a presentation box.

A very special night for our Worshipful Master to end his year on as you can see below!

Welcome Bro. Daniel Thomas

St. Peter's Lodge is very pleased to welcome yet another new made brother.  Bro. Daniel Thomas, who was proposed into Freemasonry by our Worshipful Master, was initiated on Wednesday 16th April 2008.

The Festive Board was an emotional event for our Worshipful Master, who has known Bro. Dan, now 25 years of age, since he was a young boy.  A superb evening was had by all, in particular Bro. Ken Field who was able to 'see' an initiation take place and Bro. Dan's personal guests, some of whom he wasn't aware were coming!

Bro. Dan brings the blessing of youth to St. Peter's Lodge and we hope that that trend continues well into the future.

Welcome Bro. Ken Field

On Wednesday 12th March 2007, St. Peter's Lodge initiated Mr. Kenneth Ronald Field during a splendid ceremony attended by 15 members of the Lodge and eight visiting Brethren.

Bro. Ken was word perfect, which was a blessing as some of the officers taking part weren't!  Brother Ken was presented with his first pair of white gloves by the Worshipful Master on behalf of the Lodge.

After the ceremony, W. Bro. Robert J. Townsend presented the Lodge with new  Junior Deacon, Senior Deacon and Director of Ceremonies wands, on behalf of his late father W. Bro. Norman W. Townsend, P. Prov. J. G. W. who was called to the Grand Lodge above in January.

Welcome Bro. Ken.  We hope you have a very long and happy association with Masonry in general and St. Peter's Lodge in particular.

Brilliant Burn's Night!

Another brilliant night was had by all as St. Peter's Lodge resumed celebrating Burn's Night.  After a short Lodge meeting, the Brethen joined their guests for the gathering before the celebrations began in earnest with the parading of the haggis.  The dinning room was full as Andrew our steward carried the haggis atop a silver salver, lead by W. Bro. Malcolm 'Doc' Halliday on the pipes.  W. Bro. 'Doc' continued leading the evening by giving the address to the haggis before the 100 strong gathering tucked into a hearty festive board including scotch broth, haggis tatties & 'neeps, a main course of steak & kidney pie and all the trimmings, finsihed off with fresh fruit and cream and cheese and coffee courses.  There was many a straining trouser button and kilt pin come to that and the Charity Stewards purse was bursting at the seams, with a total of £615.00 raised on the night to be split between Masonic charities and the County Air Ambulance.

Splendid Christmas Event!

What a fantastic night!  Our Christmas Informal Evening went off with a real bang, clash, toot and parp.  The West Midlands Police Brass Band were excellent, playing almost non-stop through the Festive Board which was of the very highest quality.  Our thanks go to Jackie and her team for producing a meal that would be hard to beat, even in the best of restaurants, Andrew our steward for preparing the room to such a high standard and to Barny the band leader and his crew for getting everyone's feet tapping and hands clapping to many a festive melody.

Finally, our thanks to all our visitors who enetred into the spirit of Christmas by raising an amazing £560.00 to be split between Masonic charities and the County Air Ambulance.
